This year started out with floral, rhythmic abstract paintings but soon began to change into rhythmic, abstract landscapes. My walks in Warner Park in Nashville began inspiring me. Every body of work has a beginning, middle and end, and creating purely abstract compositions was wearing thin. The ideas were getting fewer and stale. The play was becoming work. The flow was getting that locked-in quality that is completely different from creativity. Sometimes an artist needs to just work through it, and other times it is the shutting door that leads one to look for the open window. The landscapes become that open window when I found myself thinking “if only I could use this path through the woods as an inspiration for this painting”, which quickly became “why don’t I just paint this path through the woods?” And so the rest of the year was forests. Forests in winter, forests in summer, forests in spring and fall. I kept going and going, and the paintings kept flowing from this year into the next.
