This group of paintings done in 2023 show so many different paths I picked up and wandered down. One of my favorites was From the Squirrel’s Perspective, a painting I created on the porch of my studio, looking out into the backyard. I would paint a bit, then turn the canvas upside-down and paint a bit more. I remember this was a Saturday, and my family got tired of waiting for me to finish and eventually left me to my topsy-turvy canvas. It was a breakthrough in a way, I was no longer bound to a horizon line but could orient the elements of the painting in any direction the composition wanted to go. Just like the squirrels that run straight up and down the trunks of our giant trees and hang upside-down from their toes to reach birdseed (which, lets be honest, is more entertaining than watching birds!), I wanted to see the backyard without the hinderance of gravity. From there I painted Lets Get Out of the City, a painting about a weekend ride in the country, with the city they have escaped from upside down beneath the riders. And in addition to these, many more paintings of landscapes, abstractions, dreams and animals.
